As writers, we always have to write about people whose life experiences and backgrounds are different from our own. (Otherwise, our writing is pure fantasy!) In this two-session workshop, we’ll examine identity through as many lenses as possible: in terms of gender, race, class, sexual orientation, class, age, body type, gluten tolerance, nerdiness, and many more. How can we learn to recognize our own blind spots that prevent us from seeing the people and the world around us in full living colors? And how can we confront and overcome our fears of causing offense in our attempts to get inside someone whose life experience we don’t share? We’ll look at published work and do targeted writing exercises that will spark your creativity.
