SUMMARY:Elements of Writing: Plot: The Four-Letter Word that Strikes Fear into the Heart of Most Writers
DESCRIPTION:“Plot” can be one of the most slippery and angst-inducing idioms for writers of prose: fiction\, popular fiction\, and even non-fiction. In this class\, we’ll learn some tricks of plotting from published writers\, classic authors like Thomas Hardy\, E. M. Forster\, or L. Frank Baum\, and contemporaries like Gonzalo Barr\, Alison Bechdel\, and Lorrie Moore. We’ll nail down exactly what we mean by this oft-used yet little-understood term\, considering the differences between “plot\,” “story\,” and “action.” Once we’ve reached some conclusions about what exactly we mean when we talk about plot\, we’ll then analyze how plot organizes narrative in any type of writing. Finally\, we’ll turn from literary analysis to exercises to examine how plot is functioning in students’ current writing projects.

SUMMARY:The Mindful Writing Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Runs November 7 & 14 \nMany of the skills we need to write vivid stories\, poems\, and creative non-fiction (e.g.\, slowing down\, looking intensely and patiently at an object\, precision) are directly in line with one of the hottest philosophies on the spiritual scene these days: mindfulness\, a.k.a. “Be Here Now.” Tortured artists of the world\, throw off your chains! In this two-session class\, we’ll focus on exercises that you can use to heighten writing skills as well as enrich lives. We’ll begin by talking about the phenomenon of mindfulness and its intersection with heightening creativity\, considering how a mindful approach to creative writing enlivens the experience of both writer and reader. Then we’ll try out a few different mindful creative writing exercises to generate some vivid new work on the spot. Bring a pen and paper–we’re getting started immediately! \nRegister here
